SLIDING BARN DOORS

Picture
Have you been curious about adding an element of rustic, farmhouse style to your home? You’re not alone! Farmhouse style was the most popular and most-searched home décor trend of 2019, according to People magazine. Although farmhouse style hints at a more antiquated time, this trend really began to popularize in 2018. Most of Southern California has predictable weather, making wooden barn doors a great addition to any home. In other states, where the climate is a lot more humid, homeowners may have to worry about a wooden barn door warping. Luckily, in Southern California, we can enjoy this interesting new trend without having to compromise because of weather. Picture yourself in your kitchen this summer, cooking a big meal for your family. You leave the door open because you want a cross breeze; sliding open the large barn door to the patio, you can leave it open for air knowing it won’t slam shut. It’s a subtle difference, but we know this resonates with homeowners. Barn doors add an element of design flow and ambiance that is incredibly appealing. It shouldn’t be surprising that so many architects and homeowners alike suddenly have so much interest in them.

Types of sliding barn door:

There are three major types of barn doors: paneled, flush, and glass. A paneled door will give you lots of choices. The different panel styles are called “braces”, a term referring to the larger planks of wood and how they’re built into the door. For example, one type of popular panel style is the “Z brace” door. This is a door made of vertical planks with one giant diagonal plank in the middle, creating a shape like the letter “Z”.  There are “X-Brace” doors, “K-Brace” doors, and many more. If you’d rather choose a simple look, you can go with a flush door, which is just one single piece of wood. If you want a modern, contemporary look, you can choose glass barn doors, which are doors with wooden frames and glass panels. After you select your barn door style, you can choose your hardware. Once you’ve decided between paneled, flush, or glass for your barn door project, you can select the best hardware to complete the look. Your three main hardware pieces will be the track, the handle and the roller. They come in all different shapes, finishes and sizes.

Where can I install a sliding barn door?

Barn doors can elevate a modern space with an open-concept look. If you are trying to be creative with a limited amount of space, instead of a flimsy room divider, large sliding barn doors might be the perfect solution. If you are looking to use barn doors as room dividers, you can even add window panels at the top (with or without glass) to let light pass through the divided section of the room. If you already enjoy a rustic design theme in the rest of your home and you’re looking to expand on it, we can install sliding barn doors into your closet space. Add frosted glass to the door windows panes and you get both privacy and elegance in your walk-in closet. Once you’ve completed the closet, you can add sliding barn doors to your pantry space as well. Concealing rows of cabinets with sliding barn doors gives character to the kitchen, elevating your space and adding a level of smart, stylish storage. If you’re feeling adventurous, we can add them to virtually any space in your home, from the mudroom to the laundry room, to the alcove or the office space.

Customization:

Here at Palm Desert Sliding Doors, we understand quality and customization are important to you when selecting your sliding barn doors. You can decide if you want to get a solid-wood or hollow door. There are benefits to each type, and the best fit for your home will be decided upon consultation. We work with local carpenters and manufacturers who specialize in different types of wood and staining. Some of the common and most-requested door woods are Maple, Oak, Walnut and Birch. Do you prefer a more unique and edgy look instead of a natural one? We offer grey wash wood and matte-black finish as well. There are also a variety of different moldings and designs to choose from, and as we mentioned, handles too. Whatever your heart can dream up, we can create it! In addition to having many fits and finishes, we also have two main track styles to choose from to complete your vision. Do you like the appearance of single-track hanging doors, or are you more inclined to a traditional two-track look? We can design and install both a one-track and two-track barn door to suit your desires. After we choose the track-style and the door has been crafted, we will mount the track on the ceiling or wall. Once the track is mounted, installation is simple.
